Hello,
My name is Abbey. I am of Kāti Māmoe & Kāi Tahu descent.
This is my journey...
To me there's something magical about the moment when someone stops mid-stride to really see a piece of art. That's what I create for—those dual moments of discovery where the bold, immediate impact draws you in, then the intricate, handcrafted details keep you captivated.
Working primarily with natural fibres, plants, paper, and leather, I craft contemporary portraits and multimedia pieces that celebrate both heritage and innovation. My practice is deeply rooted in connection—to the land, to people, to Te Ao Māori, and to the quiet stories that unfold when we pause to observe and connect.
In 2020, I completed a tertiary Diploma in Māori & Indigenous Arts as part of my personal journey of reconnection to my whakapapa. This reconnection continues to inform every aspect of my work, weaving ancestral knowledge with contemporary expression. It's a privilege to share this journey with others through art.
